Take Action - LEO's Haven Park
Stop Verizon Cell Tower
Dear EMF Aware community,
A Verizon cell tower was approved on 12/21/2018 by the County Zoning Administrator, despite opposition from many community members. It will soon be installed on the utility pole directly in front of LEO’s Haven children’s park -
on Chanticleer Avenue.
This beautiful playground was created to be inclusive for disabled children and has been enjoyed by hundreds of children and their families since it opened on January 18.
This cell tower will expose all these children to high levels of microwave radiation, endangering their safety. Peer reviewed scientific studies have shown clear evidence of biological harm at radiation levels far below the approved "safe" exposure limits set by the FCC. These effects are more harmful to children's smaller, still developing bodies.
Please read about this research on our Scientific Research and EMF & Children's Health pages. Two Federal lawsuits were filed on 2/02 by the Children's Health Defense and the Environmental Health Trust - both challenging the FCC's inadequate and outdated exposure standards.
The engineering report submitted to the County, by Hammett & Edison, shows that microwave radiation exposure from this cell tower, anywhere on street level, will be 510,000 microwatts per square meter, which is 5% of the FCC's "safe" exposure limit of 10 million microwatts per square meter.
Comparing this level with a professional testing meter - highest level of extreme concern - is 100,000 microwatts per square meter. Maximum radiation levels allowed from this cell tower are 510,000 - 5 times higher!!
Here is a chart showing levels at which biological harm occurs. Please remember that children are so much more vulnerable.
A Sprint cell tower, close to a school in Ripon, California, was recently shut down, after 4 students developed cancer, and hundreds of parents protested. We too have this power as a community, but we need everyone's help. We are calling on the community to take action.
Verizon has the power to relocate this cell tower! Please ask Supervisor Leopold to help. Let him know that you DO NOT want a cell tower at LEO's Haven
A petition has already been signed by 183 parents and community members.
Together we can help keep this wonderful park safe for all our children.
Please write to Supervisor John Leopold to share your concerns and ask for his help. email@example.com
Here is a sample letter, sent by a community member:
Dear Mr. Leopold -- I am writing you with great concern about the Verizon cell phone tower slated to be installed right next to Leo's Haven park. I am worried about the harmful effects of microwave radiation especially right next to an area where hundreds of kids play per day. Leo's Haven is wonderful and a great addition to our community, I'd hate for this wonderful investment from the City of Santa Cruz to be deemed unsafe. There must be another place for Verizon to put this cell phone tower that is not directly next to a park. Please help on this issue
